Bee swarm collection in Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is a compact, mild island with a surprisingly rich bee landscape — chalk ridge, undercliff gardens, and the deeply wooded Shorwell and Yaverland valleys. Its island beekeeping scene is active and tight-knit.

Forage & honey flows

A mild maritime climate gives the island an early start. Blackthorn and gorse carry the pre-hawthorn period; sycamore and horse chestnut follow. Lime in Ryde, Newport, Cowes and Ventnor gives a strong June flow. Bramble is dense on every hedge and undercliff; the Downs contribute chalk grassland herbs. A small late-summer heather patch on Shalfleet and Bouldnor common, combined with coastal sea-lavender and samphire flows, gives island honey a characteristic mineral edge. Ivy on flint cottage walls closes the year.

Beekeeping character

Isle of Wight Beekeepers' Association is unusually close-knit due to the island's scale; collectors reach most parts of the island inside 30 minutes. The island has also hosted decades of bee-health research thanks to the historical "Isle of Wight disease" that shaped 20th-century UK beekeeping.

A local detail

The so-called "Isle of Wight disease" of 1906 (now identified as Acarapis woodi / tracheal mite) started here and reshaped native bee breeding across the UK.
