Bee swarm in Brading? Help is a minute away.

Brading is an ancient town on the eastern slopes of the island, sitting above the former Brading Haven tidal inlet at the edge of a distinctive downland and marshland landscape. Brading Down directly above town carries one of the finest chalk grassland wildflower swards on the island — wild thyme, marjoram, pyramidal orchid and horseshoe vetch supporting a diverse range of pollinators — while the restored wetland of the RSPB Brading Marshes reserve provides willow, reed-bed and sea-lavender forage along the Haven shoreline. The Roman villa heritage of the area reflects centuries of settled farming, and the mixed hedgerow orchards of the surrounding downland farms add a useful spring flow.

Where swarms appear in Brading

Typical swarm locations

Collectors in Brading regularly attend swarms on the chalk downland scrub above Brading Down and Nunwell, in the hawthorn and elder hedges of the downland farm lanes towards Bembridge and Sandown, in the reed-bed margins and willow carr of the Brading Marshes reserve, and in the stone and brick chimney voids of the older town-centre properties near the Bull Ring.

Forage in Isle of Wight

A mild maritime climate gives the island an early start. Blackthorn and gorse carry the pre-hawthorn period; sycamore and horse chestnut follow. Lime in Ryde, Newport, Cowes and Ventnor gives a strong June flow. Bramble is dense on every hedge and undercliff; the Downs contribute chalk grassland herbs. A small late-summer heather patch on Shalfleet and Bouldnor common, combined with coastal sea-lavender and samphire flows, gives island honey a characteristic mineral edge. Ivy on flint cottage walls closes the year.
