Bee swarm in Totland? Help is a minute away.

Totland is a quiet bay village at the far west of the Isle of Wight, where the chalk ridge of Tennyson Down drops to the Solent at the Needles. The Down's chalk grassland carries wild thyme, scabious, knapweed and horseshoe vetch — a classic chalk bee-forage that combines with coastal gorse, the wooded Afton Down valleys and the farmland behind Freshwater to support a productive local bee population.

Where swarms appear in Totland

Typical swarm locations

Swarms settle on the chalk-grassland hedgerows above the bay, on the garden walls and eaves of the Victorian seafront villas along Totland Bay, in the gorse and bramble scrub of the Tennyson Down footpaths, and occasionally on the beach groyne timbers below the pier. Collectors cover the West Wight area together with Freshwater and Yarmouth.

Forage in Isle of Wight

A mild maritime climate gives the island an early start. Blackthorn and gorse carry the pre-hawthorn period; sycamore and horse chestnut follow. Lime in Ryde, Newport, Cowes and Ventnor gives a strong June flow. Bramble is dense on every hedge and undercliff; the Downs contribute chalk grassland herbs. A small late-summer heather patch on Shalfleet and Bouldnor common, combined with coastal sea-lavender and samphire flows, gives island honey a characteristic mineral edge. Ivy on flint cottage walls closes the year.
