Bee swarm in Newport? Help is a minute away.

Newport is the county town of the Isle of Wight, set in the Medina valley at the centre of the island. The Isle of Wight Beekeepers' Association covers the whole island, and Newport's central position gives access to a diverse range of island habitats — the old orchard country of the west Wight, the chalk downland of the southern ridge, the watermeadow willows of the Medina and Eastern Yar rivers, the cliff-top heather of the south-west coast and the old walled gardens of Carisbrooke Castle and Parkhurst Forest.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors regularly attend swarms in the older garden remnants and lime trees of the High Street and St James Square conservation areas, along the Medina riverside willows and reed-bed margins at Lukely Brook and Shide, on the chalk grassland and scrub margins of Carisbrooke Down, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older town-centre and Victorian properties.

Forage in Isle of Wight

A mild maritime climate gives the island an early start. Blackthorn and gorse carry the pre-hawthorn period; sycamore and horse chestnut follow. Lime in Ryde, Newport, Cowes and Ventnor gives a strong June flow. Bramble is dense on every hedge and undercliff; the Downs contribute chalk grassland herbs. A small late-summer heather patch on Shalfleet and Bouldnor common, combined with coastal sea-lavender and samphire flows, gives island honey a characteristic mineral edge. Ivy on flint cottage walls closes the year.
