County Down · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Banbridge? Help is a minute away.

Banbridge is the main market town of the upper Bann valley, set where the River Bann cuts through rich drumlin farmland in the south of County Down. The riverside meadows and willow-lined Bann corridors run through and below the town, with Himalayan balsam colonising the banks from July. Deep double whitethorn and blackthorn hedgerows define the drumlin farm lanes on all sides, heavy with hawthorn blossom in May and bearing sloe berries into autumn. Sycamore and lime feature on the older commercial streets. Oilseed rape is grown on the flatter ground in the valley, and bramble fills the hedgerow margins through summer.

Forage in County Down

Blackthorn on drumlin hedges opens the year; sycamore is the dominant May flow. Hawthorn is abundant. Lime in Newtownards, Bangor and Downpatrick gives a strong June crop. The Mourne Mountains carry ling and bell heather — a genuinely distinctive Mournes heather honey. Bramble is dense; coastal sea-aster on Strangford Lough adds character; himalayan balsam on the Lagan gives a long late flow. Ivy on whitewashed cottage walls closes a long, mild year.
