Aberystwyth is the main town of Ceredigion — a university and market town on Cardigan Bay where the Ystwyth and Rheidol rivers meet the sea. The Constitution Hill headland, the cliff-railway gardens, the mature trees of Plascrug Avenue and the estuarine margins of the Rheidol give local bees a coastal-urban forage that runs from gorse on the clifftop in March through to ivy on the old university buildings in October. Coastal gorse gives an early start at Aberystwyth and New Quay; blackthorn and hawthorn run behind. Sycamore and hawthorn are the backbone of May.
