Bee swarm collection in Warwickshire

Warwickshire is Shakespeare country — the Forest of Arden to the north, the Feldon pasture to the south, and the gently rolling Dassett and Burton Dassett Hills between. Honey bees do well on its mix of ancient hedge, river meadow and lime-lined town.

Forage & honey flows

Early flows come from blackthorn and cherry in the Arden hedgerows and oilseed rape on the lighter soils around Southam and Shipston. Hawthorn is abundant; sycamore and field maple fill the middle of May. Lime and sweet chestnut in the parkland around Warwick, Kenilworth and Stratford produce a strong June flow. Bramble and rosebay willowherb support July, and a solid ivy flow along the ironstone villages closes a long season.

Beekeeping character

Warwickshire Beekeepers' Association has branches in Coventry, Warwick, Stratford, Nuneaton and Atherstone. Collectors here are as comfortable with timber-framed Tudor cottages as with modern canalside developments along the Stratford-upon-Avon and Grand Union corridors.
