Powys · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Welshpool? Help is a minute away.

Welshpool — Y Trallwng — is the market town of Montgomeryshire, on the Severn plain below the Breidden Hills and close to the English border. Powis Castle and its hanging gardens — one of the finest garden landscapes in Wales — contain exceptional lime trees that give an outstanding June flow to local bees, while the parkland's ancient oaks and the watermeadows of the Severn and its tributary the Rhiw extend the season. The surrounding lowland farmland is richer in oilseed rape than most of Powys. Montgomeryshire Beekeepers' Association covers the town and the northern Powys borderland.

Where swarms appear in Welshpool

Typical swarm locations

Collectors handle swarms in the lime and horse chestnut trees of Powis Castle estate and the town-centre gardens on Broad Street and High Street, along the Severn riverside willows at Welshpool Riverside Park, in the mature gardens of older properties on Salop Road and Mount Street, and in chimney stacks and eaves of the older timber-framed and stone buildings of the market town centre.

Forage in Powys

Spring comes late. Blackthorn and hawthorn carry the early season; sycamore is important on every farmstead. White clover in the hay meadows is still a meaningful flow. The dominant late-summer crop is ling heather across the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and the Cambrian uplands — dark, set, much of it commercially worked. Bilberry and upland grassland herbs add supplements. Bramble fills the sheltered valleys. A modest ivy flow on stone-built villages closes a short year.
