Machynlleth is a small market town in the Dyfi valley — widely called the "alternative capital of Wales" and the home of the Centre for Alternative Technology. The town sits at the foot of the Plynlimon uplands where the Dyfi estuary broadens, giving local bees access to a remarkable diversity of forage: the Dyfi NNR salt-marsh to the west, the ancient oak woodland of Nant yr Arian to the east, heather and bilberry on the Plynlimon plateau above, and hawthorn-hedged valley farmland in between. Collectors handle swarms in the lime and sycamore trees of the main street and Heol Penrallt, along the Dyfi riverside willows and alder at Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve, in the older stone and render properties of Maengwyn Street and Heol Maengwyn, and in chimney stacks and eaves of the slate-roofed terraced cottages and older farmsteads of the town and surrounding parishes.

Spring comes late. Blackthorn and hawthorn carry the early season; sycamore is important on every farmstead. White clover in the hay meadows is still a meaningful flow. The dominant late-summer crop is ling heather across the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and the Cambrian uplands — dark, set, much of it commercially worked. Bilberry and upland grassland herbs add supplements. Bramble fills the sheltered valleys. A modest ivy flow on stone-built villages closes a short year.
