Newtown — Y Drenewydd — is the largest town in Powys, a market and light-industrial town in the Severn valley where the young river Severn is fringed by alder, willow and wet-meadow. The town is the birthplace of Robert Owen and the centre of the mid-Wales flannel trade; its riverside parks, the lime trees of the town centre and the surrounding mixed farmland give local bees a varied lowland forage in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains foothills. Montgomeryshire Beekeepers' Association is based nearby and covers Newtown and the upper Severn valley.
Local collectors handle swarms in the lime and sycamore trees of Dolerw Park and the town-centre gardens, along the Severn riverside willows and wet-meadow at the Robert Owen Museum park, in the older stone and render properties of Broad Street and The Cross, and in chimney stacks and roof voids of the Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing of the residential streets on the hills above the river.

Spring comes late. Blackthorn and hawthorn carry the early season; sycamore is important on every farmstead. White clover in the hay meadows is still a meaningful flow. The dominant late-summer crop is ling heather across the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and the Cambrian uplands — dark, set, much of it commercially worked. Bilberry and upland grassland herbs add supplements. Bramble fills the sheltered valleys. A modest ivy flow on stone-built villages closes a short year.
