Montgomery — Trefaldwyn — is a tiny historic border town laid out on a formal medieval grid below its ruined Norman castle, perched on a crag above the Camlad valley. Despite its small size (barely a thousand inhabitants), Montgomery retains the full apparatus of a market town: the Georgian town hall, the church of St Nicholas with its ornate rood screen, and the Dragon Hotel on Broad Street. The surrounding farmland of the upper Severn plain and the Kerry Hills carries hawthorn-rich hedgerows heavy with May blossom; sycamore is the backbone of the early flow in the sheltered valleys. The Kerry Ridgeway upland to the south contributes bilberry and ling heather in late summer, and bramble lines every farm lane. Montgomeryshire Beekeepers' Association is based a short distance north at Newtown.
Collectors handle swarms in the old stone and render properties of Broad Street and Arthur Street, in the castle grounds scrub above the town, along the Camlad river hawthorn and elder hedgerows, and in the farm outbuildings and garden walls of the surrounding estate farmland toward Forden, Chirbury and Kerry.

Spring comes late. Blackthorn and hawthorn carry the early season; sycamore is important on every farmstead. White clover in the hay meadows is still a meaningful flow. The dominant late-summer crop is ling heather across the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and the Cambrian uplands — dark, set, much of it commercially worked. Bilberry and upland grassland herbs add supplements. Bramble fills the sheltered valleys. A modest ivy flow on stone-built villages closes a short year.
