Llanfair Caereinion is a small market town on the River Banwy in Montgomeryshire, and the western terminus of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway — one of the Great Little Trains of Wales, a narrow-gauge steam railway that winds through twelve miles of mid-Wales countryside from Welshpool. The town sits in a shallow valley of the upper Banwy, surrounded by the rolling hills of Montgomeryshire with a scale and a character that remains genuinely rural and unhurried. The Banwy river meadows carry a strong white clover flow from June on the improved flood pastures; hawthorn and blackthorn are dense on the hill hedgerows above the valley; sycamore on the older village properties and the railway-station garden provides the May town forage. The hill country above Llanfair toward Meifod and Llanrhaeadr carries ancient hedgerow systems with crab apple, field maple and dogwood supplementing the traditional May flow. Bramble and elder fill the valley-bottom field margins and stream courses; ivy on the churchyard walls closes the season in October.

Spring comes late. Blackthorn and hawthorn carry the early season; sycamore is important on every farmstead. White clover in the hay meadows is still a meaningful flow. The dominant late-summer crop is ling heather across the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and the Cambrian uplands — dark, set, much of it commercially worked. Bilberry and upland grassland herbs add supplements. Bramble fills the sheltered valleys. A modest ivy flow on stone-built villages closes a short year.
