Newport · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Lliswerry? Help is a minute away.

Lliswerry is a residential and light-industrial area of southeast Newport, lying between the city centre and the open Gwent Levels beyond Llanwern. The Gwent BKA covers this area, and the location gives local bees access to a remarkable mix of habitats: Newport Wetlands RSPB reserve at Goldcliff, just to the south, provides a major late-summer flow of purple loosestrife, hemp agrimony and marsh thistle on the Levels; the reedbeds and ditches of the coastal wetlands carry meadowsweet and willowherb. The former Llanwern steelworks land, now being restored, supports extensive rosebay willowherb and buddleia; bramble is dense on the brownfield margins. Lime and sycamore in the residential streets carry June, and ivy on the older terrace walls closes the year.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors regularly attend swarms in the older terraced properties and churchyard trees of the Lliswerry residential streets, along the wetland margins and drainage ditch willows of the Newport Wetlands reserve at Goldcliff, on the brownfield rosebay willowherb stands of the former Llanwern steelworks site, and in the eaves of the older semi-detached and terrace properties between Nash Road and the A48.

Forage in Newport

The Gwent Levels carry a distinctive damp-meadow forage — purple loosestrife, hemp agrimony, meadowsweet — and white clover on the grazed marsh. Wentwood provides a classic ancient woodland flow of sycamore, field maple, lime and sweet chestnut. The city's Belle Vue Park and the banks of the Usk offer urban lime. Bramble is universal; rosebay willowherb flushes former industrial land. Coastal sea-lavender at Peterstone Wentlooge adds seasoning, and ivy on the old red-brick terraces closes the year.
