Pill is the historic dockside quarter of Newport, on the west bank of the Usk just north of the town centre, with Shaftesbury Park providing open greenspace beside the former dock corridor. The Usk riverside bank — with its willow scrub, rosebay willowherb and ivy-clad walls — provides close-to-city forage; the brownfield fringe of the former docks contributes buddleia and late-summer bramble. Collectors handle swarms in the Shaftesbury Park trees and Usk riverside willows, on the brownfield and scrub margin of the former dock land, in the older walled gardens of the surviving Victorian properties of Commercial Road and North Street, and in the roof voids of the older terraces throughout the quarter.

The Gwent Levels carry a distinctive damp-meadow forage — purple loosestrife, hemp agrimony, meadowsweet — and white clover on the grazed marsh. Wentwood provides a classic ancient woodland flow of sycamore, field maple, lime and sweet chestnut. The city's Belle Vue Park and the banks of the Usk offer urban lime. Bramble is universal; rosebay willowherb flushes former industrial land. Coastal sea-lavender at Peterstone Wentlooge adds seasoning, and ivy on the old red-brick terraces closes the year.
