Bee swarm collection in Herefordshire

Herefordshire is orchard country par excellence — cider and perry on a scale found almost nowhere else in Britain — ringed by Black Mountains forage and the deep hedges of the Wye Valley. Bees do famously well here, and swarms are collected by one of the friendliest BKAs in the country.

Forage & honey flows

The season opens on tens of thousands of tonnes of orchard blossom — cider apple, culinary apple and traditional perry pear — across the Leominster and Hereford belt. Hawthorn on deep double-hedges follows; hop gardens provide a quieter supplementary forage. Lime and sweet chestnut dot the market towns. The Black Mountain foothills add bilberry, heather and gorse to hives on the county edge, and bramble is dense throughout. A long, strong ivy flow on red-sandstone churches and orchard windbreaks carries the year out.

Beekeeping character

Herefordshire Beekeepers' Association members are known for close relationships with orchard growers; migratory pollination work is still practical here. Swarm collection covers timber-framed cottages, black-and-white villages, farm tractor sheds and the more recent Hereford and Ross-on-Wye estates.
