Ledbury is a medieval market town on the eastern edge of Herefordshire, set below the Malvern Hills and surrounded by the apple and pear orchards of the Leadon valley and the fruit-growing country that makes this corner of England famous for perry pears. The Herefordshire BKA covers the town, and the orchards, hop yards and hedged pasture of the Leadon and Frome valleys, combined with the limestone grassland of the Malvern Hills AONB and the old walled gardens of the town centre, give local bees one of the richest fruit-blossom seasons in the country.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the timber-framed garden and orchard remnants of the High Street and Church Lane conservation areas, in the perry-pear orchards and old hop-yard hedgerows of the Ledbury Park and Wellington Heath lanes, along the Leadon riverside willows and watermeadow margins at Dymock and Donnington, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older market-town properties.

The season opens on tens of thousands of tonnes of orchard blossom — cider apple, culinary apple and traditional perry pear — across the Leominster and Hereford belt. Hawthorn on deep double-hedges follows; hop gardens provide a quieter supplementary forage. Lime and sweet chestnut dot the market towns. The Black Mountain foothills add bilberry, heather and gorse to hives on the county edge, and bramble is dense throughout. A long, strong ivy flow on red-sandstone churches and orchard windbreaks carries the year out.
