Pwllheli is the principal market town of the Llŷn Peninsula, a harbour town on the sheltered south-facing coast of Cardigan Bay. The Llŷn Peninsula has a remarkably mild maritime climate — one of the earliest places in Wales for gorse, which begins flowering on the clifftop headlands as early as January. The peninsula's small sheltered valleys, ancient hedgebanks and hay meadows give local bees a diverse forage on one of Wales' quietest landscapes. Collectors handle swarms in the lime and sycamore trees of the town centre around the Maes and Station Square, along the harbour-wall gorse and sheltered gardens of the South Beach area, in the older stone and render properties on Stryd Fawr and Y Maes, and in chimney stacks and eaves of the smaller slate-roofed cottages and farmsteads of the surrounding Llŷn parishes.

Spring opens late. Gorse along the Llŷn coast and blackthorn in the sheltered Conwy and Mawddach valleys begin the year. Sycamore and hawthorn carry May; lime is present in Bangor, Caernarfon and Dolgellau. The mountain heather — bell first, then ling — across the Berwyns, the Carneddau and the Rhinogau brings a reliably strong August crop. Bilberry on oak-fringed hills and bramble in every sheltered combe support midsummer. Coastal sea-lavender on the Dyfi estuary adds character; ivy on slate cottages closes a short, high-quality year.
