Porthmadog is a Victorian slate-exporting harbour town at the mouth of the Glaslyn estuary, backed by the Snowdonian peaks and fronted by the great salt-marsh of the Traeth Mawr. The estuary marshes and the sheltered valley of the Glaslyn give local bees an unusual combination of coastal salt-marsh forage and upland sycamore-and-hawthorn hedgerows. The restored Ffestiniog Railway runs through a particularly fine stretch of mixed woodland and willow scrub above the town. Gwynedd Beekeepers' Association covers Porthmadog and the Glaslyn valley.
Local collectors handle swarms in the sycamore and lime trees of the town centre on High Street and Lombard Street, along the Glaslyn estuary salt-marsh margins at Y Traeth and Borth-y-Gest, in the mature gardens and older slate-and-stone properties of the residential streets above the harbour, and in chimney stacks and eaves of the Victorian terraces on Madoc Street and Church Street.

Spring opens late. Gorse along the Llŷn coast and blackthorn in the sheltered Conwy and Mawddach valleys begin the year. Sycamore and hawthorn carry May; lime is present in Bangor, Caernarfon and Dolgellau. The mountain heather — bell first, then ling — across the Berwyns, the Carneddau and the Rhinogau brings a reliably strong August crop. Bilberry on oak-fringed hills and bramble in every sheltered combe support midsummer. Coastal sea-lavender on the Dyfi estuary adds character; ivy on slate cottages closes a short, high-quality year.
