Criccieth is a small seaside town on the south coast of the Llŷn Peninsula, built below a twin-towered castle on a headland above Cardigan Bay. The town's sheltered south-facing position gives it one of the mildest climates in north Wales, with gorse on the headland cliffs flowering unusually early and the castle-ground lime trees and seaside gardens carrying a long summer flow. The inland lanes towards Llanystumdwy — birthplace of Lloyd George — are hedged with hawthorn, elder and bramble. Lleyn ac Eifionydd Beekeepers' Association covers the town and the eastern Llŷn coast.
Collectors handle swarms in the lime trees and sheltered gardens of the castle approach and Marine Terrace, along the coastal path gorse and clifftop scrub between Criccieth and Llanystumdwy, in the older stone and render properties of the town centre on Castle Street and Stryd Fawr, and in chimney stacks and eaves of the Victorian seaside villas and older cottages of the residential streets.

Spring opens late. Gorse along the Llŷn coast and blackthorn in the sheltered Conwy and Mawddach valleys begin the year. Sycamore and hawthorn carry May; lime is present in Bangor, Caernarfon and Dolgellau. The mountain heather — bell first, then ling — across the Berwyns, the Carneddau and the Rhinogau brings a reliably strong August crop. Bilberry on oak-fringed hills and bramble in every sheltered combe support midsummer. Coastal sea-lavender on the Dyfi estuary adds character; ivy on slate cottages closes a short, high-quality year.
