Dolgellau is the market town of Meirionnydd, a grey-stone town in the Mawddach valley at the foot of Cadair Idris. The Mawddach estuary to the west — with its Scots pine-clad hillsides and RSPB reserve — and the sessile oakwoods of the Coed y Brenin forest to the north give local bees a magnificent summer forage. Heather on the slopes of Cadair Idris and the Rhinogau gives a reliable August supplement; bilberry adds an early-summer crop in the oakwood understorey. Collectors handle swarms in the lime and sycamore trees of the town square and the older stone properties on Eldon Square and Lombard Street, along the Mawddach estuary margins and the Precipice Walk above the valley, in the walled farmstead gardens on the hillside lanes above the town, and in chimney stacks and eaves of the dense grey-stone terraces of the medieval town centre.

Spring opens late. Gorse along the Llŷn coast and blackthorn in the sheltered Conwy and Mawddach valleys begin the year. Sycamore and hawthorn carry May; lime is present in Bangor, Caernarfon and Dolgellau. The mountain heather — bell first, then ling — across the Berwyns, the Carneddau and the Rhinogau brings a reliably strong August crop. Bilberry on oak-fringed hills and bramble in every sheltered combe support midsummer. Coastal sea-lavender on the Dyfi estuary adds character; ivy on slate cottages closes a short, high-quality year.
