Bee swarm in Barmouth? Help is a minute away.

Barmouth — Abermaw — is a seaside town at the mouth of the Mawddach estuary, built on a narrow strip between the Cardigan Bay beach and the steep rocky hillside of Dinas Oleu — the first land ever gifted to the National Trust, in 1895. The Mawddach estuary and its fringing dune system to the south at Fairbourne give local bees a distinctive coastal forage; gorse on the hillside cliffs above the town flowers from early spring. The sheltered estuary gardens, the Barmouth Bridge boardwalk willows and the sessile oakwood above the cliff path extend the season well into autumn. Meirionnydd Beekeepers' Association covers the south Meirionnydd coast.

Typical swarm locations

Local collectors handle swarms in the cliff-face gorse and the gardens of the terraced properties on the hillside streets above High Street, along the Mawddach estuary margins and the dune grassland south of the town, in the older render-and-stone properties on Church Street and the Quay, and in chimney stacks and eaves of the Victorian holiday terraces and older cottages of the seafront area.

Forage in Gwynedd

Spring opens late. Gorse along the Llŷn coast and blackthorn in the sheltered Conwy and Mawddach valleys begin the year. Sycamore and hawthorn carry May; lime is present in Bangor, Caernarfon and Dolgellau. The mountain heather — bell first, then ling — across the Berwyns, the Carneddau and the Rhinogau brings a reliably strong August crop. Bilberry on oak-fringed hills and bramble in every sheltered combe support midsummer. Coastal sea-lavender on the Dyfi estuary adds character; ivy on slate cottages closes a short, high-quality year.
