Bee swarm in Bangor? Help is a minute away.

Bangor is a cathedral city and university town on the southern shore of the Menai Strait, sheltered from the northwest by the Anglesey landmass and from the east by the slopes of the Carneddau. The university grounds and the cathedral close contain some of the finest lime trees in north Wales; the Menai strait-side woodland and the city's mature suburban gardens extend the forage. Bangor sits at the gateway between the Anglesey farmland and the Eryri uplands — a privileged position for bees, with gorse on the Vaynol estate nearby and sycamore throughout the city. Gwynedd Beekeepers' Association covers the city and the Menai Strait area.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors handle swarms in the lime trees and older stone properties of the cathedral close on College Road and High Street, in the mature campus gardens of Bangor University, along the Menai waterfront woodland and gorse at Hirael and Garth Pier, and in chimney stacks and roof voids of the Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing of the residential streets above the lower town.

Forage in Gwynedd

Spring opens late. Gorse along the Llŷn coast and blackthorn in the sheltered Conwy and Mawddach valleys begin the year. Sycamore and hawthorn carry May; lime is present in Bangor, Caernarfon and Dolgellau. The mountain heather — bell first, then ling — across the Berwyns, the Carneddau and the Rhinogau brings a reliably strong August crop. Bilberry on oak-fringed hills and bramble in every sheltered combe support midsummer. Coastal sea-lavender on the Dyfi estuary adds character; ivy on slate cottages closes a short, high-quality year.
