Bee swarm in Aberdaron? Help is a minute away.

Aberdaron is a small, remote fishing village at the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula — the last stop on the ancient pilgrims' route to Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli). The village has a Norman church, a handful of whitewashed cottages and a long sandy beach facing south-west into Cardigan Bay. The exposed clifftops and headlands of the Llŷn coast are thick with maritime gorse from March, and the warm south-facing slopes carry blackthorn, hawthorn and bramble well into October. White clover on the small, hedged fields of the peninsula tip adds midsummer flow; sea campion and thrift on the cliff path contribute character. Lleyn ac Eifionydd Beekeepers' Association covers the Llŷn tip.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors here respond to swarms on the clifftop gorse and maritime scrub above the beach and on the headlands towards Mynydd Mawr, in the sheltered cottage gardens and ivy-covered stone walls of the village lane, in the hawthorn of the small enclosure hedges on the farms above the bay, and in eaves and roof voids of the older stone and render properties near the church.

Forage in Gwynedd

Spring opens late. Gorse along the Llŷn coast and blackthorn in the sheltered Conwy and Mawddach valleys begin the year. Sycamore and hawthorn carry May; lime is present in Bangor, Caernarfon and Dolgellau. The mountain heather — bell first, then ling — across the Berwyns, the Carneddau and the Rhinogau brings a reliably strong August crop. Bilberry on oak-fringed hills and bramble in every sheltered combe support midsummer. Coastal sea-lavender on the Dyfi estuary adds character; ivy on slate cottages closes a short, high-quality year.
