Bee swarm in Fintona? Help is a minute away.

Fintona is a market village in the drumlins south of Omagh, set in the broad agricultural lowland of the Strule valley hinterland where small fields and dense whitethorn hedges give the landscape a close, sheltered character. The surrounding farmland is a mix of improved pasture, hay meadow and arable ground typical of mid-Tyrone; the hedgerow network is among the most intact in Ulster, providing exceptional hawthorn and blackthorn blossom in May. White clover on the improved grazing is the main mid-summer crop. The lower slopes of the Sperrins edge to the north-east carry bilberry and bell heather from July, accessible to apiaries on the valley sides. The Owenkillew River flows through river-meadow and willow carr ground in the valley east of the town.

Forage in County Tyrone

Blackthorn and whitethorn drumlin hedges open the year. Sycamore and hawthorn dominate May. Lime is present in Omagh, Dungannon and Strabane. The Sperrins contribute bell and ling heather in August — a dark, thick crop some Tyrone beekeepers work seriously. Bilberry in the oakwoods adds a June supplement; rosebay willowherb is dense on every disused rail line and stone quarry. Ivy finishes the year on whitewashed cottages.
