Castlederg is a small agricultural market town on the River Derg in the far west of County Tyrone, close to the Donegal border. The Derg valley runs through a landscape of mixed drumlin farmland and rough hillside, with willow and alder along the river margins and whitethorn hedges on the field boundaries throughout. Bessy Bell Mountain above the town carries heather and gorse on the moorland fringe, giving a late-summer flow of ling alongside early bramble on the rough ground below. The town itself has ivy on older whitewashed walls and sycamore in the wider plots. A close-knit farming community with a long tradition of livestock markets.
Collectors attend swarms along the willow and alder bankside of the River Derg through and below the town, in the gorse and heather scrub on the lower slopes of Bessy Bell Mountain to the north-east, in the whitethorn hedgerows on the farm lanes toward Omagh and Newtownstewart, and in the eaves and cavity walls of older properties near the town square.

Blackthorn and whitethorn drumlin hedges open the year. Sycamore and hawthorn dominate May. Lime is present in Omagh, Dungannon and Strabane. The Sperrins contribute bell and ling heather in August — a dark, thick crop some Tyrone beekeepers work seriously. Bilberry in the oakwoods adds a June supplement; rosebay willowherb is dense on every disused rail line and stone quarry. Ivy finishes the year on whitewashed cottages.
