County Fermanagh · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Lisnaskea? Help is a minute away.

Lisnaskea is the largest town in south Fermanagh and the principal market centre for the lower county. It sits on the eastern shore of Lower Lough Erne, with the ruins of Castle Balfour rising above the town streetscape. The surrounding drumlin farmland carries dense whitethorn hedges that are a major spring forage source, with bramble and meadowsweet along field margins through summer. The Erne shoreline nearby gives willow carr, reed-bed margins and good stands of purple loosestrife and hemp agrimony. Sycamore and lime around the older streets and estate yards supplement the wildflower flow. Ivy on the castle masonry supports late autumn foraging.

Forage in County Fermanagh

Blackthorn and hawthorn on limestone hedges open the year; sycamore fills May. Lime in Enniskillen gives a strong June flow. Bramble is dense; the lough islands' limestone grassland contributes wild thyme, marjoram and knapweed. Hemp agrimony and purple loosestrife along the Erne and its tributaries carry a long late-summer flow. A modest ling heather crop on the Cuilcagh uplands, and ivy on old lakeside cottages, close a long mild year.
