Castlewellan is a planned estate town at the northern foot of the Mourne Mountains, developed by the Annesley family in the late 18th century around a formal square that still defines the town character. Castlewellan Forest Park holds the National Arboretum — one of the finest collections of rare and specimen trees in Ireland, including many early-flowering cherries, magnolias, rhododendrons and exotic conifers that give exceptional early-spring forage unusual for this latitude. The walled garden, the peace maze and the lower and upper lakes provide sheltered forage through summer; the Mourne moorland begins immediately above the park boundary, carrying ling and bell heather from late July. The deep drumlin farmland north toward Ballyward and Dromara carries whitethorn-rich hedges in May; sycamore is abundant on the estate lanes and village margins.

Blackthorn on drumlin hedges opens the year; sycamore is the dominant May flow. Hawthorn is abundant. Lime in Newtownards, Bangor and Downpatrick gives a strong June crop. The Mourne Mountains carry ling and bell heather — a genuinely distinctive Mournes heather honey. Bramble is dense; coastal sea-aster on Strangford Lough adds character; himalayan balsam on the Lagan gives a long late flow. Ivy on whitewashed cottage walls closes a long, mild year.
