Pencader is a small village and former parish on the upper Teifi tributary of the Gwynnes Fawr, straddling the A485 Carmarthen to Lampeter road on the watershed between the Teifi and Tywi catchments. The village holds a significant place in Welsh history: Pencader Castle, now a low earthwork mound in a field above the village, was the meeting place recorded by Giraldus Cambrensis where a Welsh elder gave a famous speech to Henry II in 1163 about the resilience of the Welsh people. The surrounding countryside is a quiet mosaic of dairy and sheep farms, oak and ash hedgerow trees, and the stream corridors of the Gwynnes and Teifi tributaries that give the forage year its character. Sycamore on the A485 roadside trees and in the village provide the May flow; hawthorn and blackthorn on the hedgerows between Pencader and the Ceredigion boundary carry the spring blossom. White clover on the improved pastures through June and July is the main summer flow; the oak-fringed stream valleys hold honeydew from oak aphids in warm summers. Bramble is dense in all field corners and along the stream sides; ivy on stone and render farmhouses closes the year.
Collectors attend swarms in the older stone farmhouses and cottages along the A485 and village lanes, in the castle earthwork and adjacent hawthorn scrub on the hill above the village, along the Gwynnes Fawr stream corridor elder and willow margins, in the farm outbuildings of the plateau farmland between Pencader and Llanwnen, and in the mature garden trees of the older residential properties on the village edge.

Blackthorn and hawthorn in the Tywi and Teifi valleys open the year. Sycamore is everywhere; white clover in the hay meadows still matters.
