Ammanford is a former anthracite-mining town in the Amman valley, set below the western escarpment of the Black Mountain. The valley sides carry old oak and birch woodland; hawthorn and blackthorn line the old colliery boundary hedges; the open moorland of Mynydd y Gwair above gives bilberry and bell heather in August. The town parks and allotment gardens provide white clover, lime and bramble through the season's middle. The Carmarthen BKA covers this area, with members who work the Black Mountain heather.
Collectors handle swarms in the older garden trees and allotment plots of the town and the surrounding Betws and Glanamman residential areas, along the Amman riverside and its wet-meadow margins, on the open moorland fringe above the valley, and in the eaves and chimney stacks of the terraced valley-floor housing.

Blackthorn and hawthorn in the Tywi and Teifi valleys open the year. Sycamore is everywhere; white clover in the hay meadows still matters.
