Warminster is a market town at the south-western edge of Salisbury Plain, set in the upper Wylye valley between the chalk downs and the Longleat limestone hills. The West Wiltshire BKA covers the town and the surrounding countryside, and the landscape — chalk grassland with its marjoram and scabious, the watermeadow willows of the Wylye, the old walled gardens of Longleat and the hedged farmland of the Deverills valley — makes Warminster a well-placed base for bees with access to both the Plain and the Somerset border country.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the older garden remnants and lime trees of the Market Place and High Street conservation area, along the Wylye watermeadow willows and alders towards Heytesbury and Sutton Veny, on the chalk grassland margins of Battlesbury and Scratchbury hill forts, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older market-town and military-quarter properties.

Early blackthorn and hawthorn along the cowslip-strewn down edges open the year, followed by oilseed rape on the clay vale around Chippenham. Sainfoin is still grown here, and chalk grassland herbs — thyme, marjoram, knapweed, yellow rattle — give a herb-scented character to summer Wiltshire honey that connoisseurs notice. Lime lines Salisbury, Marlborough and Devizes streets; sweet chestnut at Savernake contributes to June. A small but reliable late ivy flow on flint churchyards closes a long chalkland season.
