Swindon is the largest town in Wiltshire, set on the northern chalk escarpment where the downs give way to the upper Thames clay vale. The North Wiltshire BKA covers the town and the surrounding countryside, and despite Swindon's size its surrounding landscape — the chalk grassland of the Marlborough Downs, the old water-meadows of the upper Ray valley, Coate Water Country Park and the allotment gardens of the older Victorian railway quarter — gives local bees a more varied season than the suburban setting suggests.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the older garden and allotment plots of the railway village and Eastcott conservation areas, in the hedgerow oaks and scrub margins of the Marlborough Downs lanes towards Wroughton and Chiseldon, along the waterside willows and reedbed margins of Coate Water and the upper Ray, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older Victorian and Edwardian properties of Old Town.

Early blackthorn and hawthorn along the cowslip-strewn down edges open the year, followed by oilseed rape on the clay vale around Chippenham. Sainfoin is still grown here, and chalk grassland herbs — thyme, marjoram, knapweed, yellow rattle — give a herb-scented character to summer Wiltshire honey that connoisseurs notice. Lime lines Salisbury, Marlborough and Devizes streets; sweet chestnut at Savernake contributes to June. A small but reliable late ivy flow on flint churchyards closes a long chalkland season.
