Marlborough is a handsome market town on the Kennet in the heart of the Marlborough Downs, with one of the widest high streets in England and surrounded by chalk downland rich in wild flowers. The East Wiltshire BKA is based in the area, and the surrounding landscape — chalk grassland with its sainfoin, marjoram and rockrose, the ancient beechwoods of Savernake Forest, the watermeadow willows of the upper Kennet and the old college walled gardens — gives local bees an outstanding season.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the lime trees and old flint-and-brick garden walls of the High Street and St Mary's conservation area, in the beech and hawthorn scrub margins of Savernake Forest and the Marlborough Downs byways, along the watermeadow willows and meadowsweet banks of the upper Kennet towards Mildenhall and Fyfield, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older town-centre properties.

Early blackthorn and hawthorn along the cowslip-strewn down edges open the year, followed by oilseed rape on the clay vale around Chippenham. Sainfoin is still grown here, and chalk grassland herbs — thyme, marjoram, knapweed, yellow rattle — give a herb-scented character to summer Wiltshire honey that connoisseurs notice. Lime lines Salisbury, Marlborough and Devizes streets; sweet chestnut at Savernake contributes to June. A small but reliable late ivy flow on flint churchyards closes a long chalkland season.
