Bee swarm in Pewsey? Help is a minute away.

Pewsey is a small market town in the Vale of Pewsey, the broad chalk basin between Salisbury Plain and the Marlborough Downs that forms one of the most productive agricultural valleys in Wiltshire. The Vale has a particularly rich flora — the old water meadows were once famous for their fritillaries — and the mix of permanent pasture, hedged arable and sheltered village orchards gives local colonies a long and varied season. Kennet BKA serves this area. The Kennet and Avon Canal passes close to the town, and the chalk track over Pewsey Downs National Nature Reserve is lined with wild thyme, milkwort and kidney vetch.

Typical swarm locations

Swarms in Pewsey are found on the hawthorn and field maple of the hedgerows flanking the footpaths towards Oare and Manningford, in the older brick-and-flint cottages and farmhouses of the High Street, in the canal-side willows and alder south of the town, and in the garden apple and pear trees of the residential streets off Ball Road.

Forage in Wiltshire

Early blackthorn and hawthorn along the cowslip-strewn down edges open the year, followed by oilseed rape on the clay vale around Chippenham. Sainfoin is still grown here, and chalk grassland herbs — thyme, marjoram, knapweed, yellow rattle — give a herb-scented character to summer Wiltshire honey that connoisseurs notice. Lime lines Salisbury, Marlborough and Devizes streets; sweet chestnut at Savernake contributes to June. A small but reliable late ivy flow on flint churchyards closes a long chalkland season.
