Bee swarm in Saundersfoot? Help is a minute away.

Saundersfoot is a popular seaside village on the north shore of Carmarthen Bay, four miles north of Tenby, with a harbour, sandy beach and a compact village centre of gift shops and restaurants. The village grew around a 19th-century coal-exporting harbour; the surrounding woodland and gorse-covered cliffs of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park give the area a rich forage landscape. Clifftop gorse and blackthorn are prolific on the headlands; the wooded dingles between Saundersfoot and Monkstone Point carry hazel, hawthorn and sycamore. Bramble and white clover are strong on the cliff-path margins. Pembrokeshire Beekeepers' Association covers this part of the coast.

Typical swarm locations

Local collectors handle swarms on the clifftop gorse and coastal scrub above the harbour and along the cliff path towards Monkstone and Wiseman's Bridge, in the sheltered cottage and beach-house gardens of the village lanes behind the harbour, in the wooded dingles running down to the coast, and in eaves and chimney stacks of the older stone and render properties near St Issell's Church.

Forage in Pembrokeshire

Gorse on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path begins flowering in earnest by March. Blackthorn and hawthorn follow on the sheltered hedges; sycamore and horse chestnut in Tenby, Haverfordwest, St Davids and Fishguard carry May. Lime and bramble fill midsummer in the towns. The Preseli hills contribute bell and ling heather in a quietly reliable August flow. Coastal sea-lavender, sea-thrift and dune plants along Freshwater West and Newgale add seasoning; ivy on stone-built cottage walls closes the year.
