Bee swarm in Fishguard? Help is a minute away.

Fishguard — Abergwaun — is a ferry port and fishing village in north Pembrokeshire, sitting above a sheltered bay at the mouth of the Gwaun valley. The Gwaun valley behind the town is a deep, ancient oak woodland and one of the best-preserved traditional landscapes in Wales; its bluebell woods, hawthorn hedges and river-side willows give local bees a fine spring forage in a sheltered inland setting. The exposed clifftop gorse of the Strumble Head headland, just four kilometres to the west, begins to flower from February. Pembrokeshire Beekeepers' Association covers this northern coastal area.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors cover swarms in the older stone and render properties of the town centre on Market Square and High Street, along the Gwaun valley oak woodland and river margins in the Gwaun Valley below Llanychaer, in the sheltered gardens of Lower Fishguard's harbour cottages, and in chimney stacks and eaves of the older terraced housing on the hillside above the ferry terminal.

Forage in Pembrokeshire

Gorse on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path begins flowering in earnest by March. Blackthorn and hawthorn follow on the sheltered hedges; sycamore and horse chestnut in Tenby, Haverfordwest, St Davids and Fishguard carry May. Lime and bramble fill midsummer in the towns. The Preseli hills contribute bell and ling heather in a quietly reliable August flow. Coastal sea-lavender, sea-thrift and dune plants along Freshwater West and Newgale add seasoning; ivy on stone-built cottage walls closes the year.
