Bee swarm in Nairn? Help is a minute away.

Nairn is the sunshine town of the Highland coast — the Moray Firth's exceptional drying climate makes it the driest town in Scotland by many measures, and the sheltered farmland behind the beach gives bees one of the most reliable seasons on the east Highland coast. The Nairn beach and its dune system carry sea-aster and sea-pink; the River Nairn valley has hawthorn hedges, willow and elder that frame the farmland corridor south; and oilseed rape on the Nairn and Cawdor estate farmland gives a strong early flow by Highland standards. The lime avenues of the Victoria villa town and the mature trees of Cawdor Castle policies add estate-garden character to a solid coastal season.

Forage in Highland

The season arrives late — gorse and broom on the Moray coast and sycamore in sheltered valleys begin May. Raspberry (cultivated and wild) on Easter Ross gives a substantial early flow. The Highland defining crop is ling heather on the huge moors of the central, eastern and western Highlands — the finest UK heather honey with a distinct red-amber set and jelly texture, still commercially worked. Bell heather, bilberry and upland herbs supplement. Coastal sea-thrift and ivy on lochside cottages close a short, high-quality year.
