Bee swarm collection in Highland

The Highlands are the largest ceremonial area in the UK — a huge, wild landscape of heather moor, Caledonian pine and sea-lochs. Honey bees here work a short but magnificent season.

Forage & honey flows

The season arrives late — gorse and broom on the Moray coast and sycamore in sheltered valleys begin May. Raspberry (cultivated and wild) on Easter Ross gives a substantial early flow. The Highland defining crop is ling heather on the huge moors of the central, eastern and western Highlands — the finest UK heather honey with a distinct red-amber set and jelly texture, still commercially worked. Bell heather, bilberry and upland herbs supplement. Coastal sea-thrift and ivy on lochside cottages close a short, high-quality year.

Beekeeping character

Inverness, Moray, Skye, and Caithness Beekeepers' associations cover the region. Many Highland beekeepers are semi-commercial heather specialists. Collectors here reach distances most southern counties never consider — a callout may be 80 miles away.

A local detail

The native Scottish black bee (Apis mellifera mellifera) has a dedicated conservation programme in the Highlands, with protected areas on Colonsay and parts of the west coast.
