Bury is a market town on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, known for its open-air market and for the East Lancashire Railway that runs north through the Irwell Valley to Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall. The Irwell Valley corridor provides excellent forage — sycamore, hawthorn, willowherb and himalayan balsam along the river margins — and the moors above Tottington and Ramsbottom offer heather from late July.
Swarms in Bury are often reported along the Irwell Valley Sculpture Trail hedgerows, in the mature trees of Burrs Country Park, in the garden trees and stone-walled boundaries of the older properties around Walmersley and Tottington, and on the chimney stacks and eaves of the Victorian terraces in the town centre and Fishpool neighbourhoods.

The city-region opens on sycamore and horse chestnut in the parks of Salford, Manchester and Stockport, then leans into bramble, white clover and lime on the flat lowland. The distinctive late flow is rosebay willowherb on the disturbed ground around reservoirs, railway lines and the regenerating post-industrial brownfield — a genuinely regional flavour. Bell and ling heather on the Saddleworth and West Pennine moors gives the best hives a strong August crop, and ivy finishes the year on sheltered terraces and Victorian park fringes.
