Bolton is a former cotton-spinning town on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, set between the Chorley coalfield to the west and the moor above Belmont and Rivington Pike to the north. The Greater Manchester BKA covers the town, and the surrounding landscape — the heather and bilberry moorland of the West Pennine Moors above Rivington, the Irwell headwater and Croal riverside willows, the old parkland of Lever Park and the mixed farmland of the Lancashire plain fringe — gives local bees access to genuine moorland heather forage from late July.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the older garden remnants and lime trees of the Churchgate and Bank Street conservation areas, on the heather and bilberry moorland margins of Rivington Pike and Winter Hill, along the Croal and Irwell riverside willows and watermeadow margins at Moses Gate Country Park, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older Victorian cotton-town properties.

The city-region opens on sycamore and horse chestnut in the parks of Salford, Manchester and Stockport, then leans into bramble, white clover and lime on the flat lowland. The distinctive late flow is rosebay willowherb on the disturbed ground around reservoirs, railway lines and the regenerating post-industrial brownfield — a genuinely regional flavour. Bell and ling heather on the Saddleworth and West Pennine moors gives the best hives a strong August crop, and ivy finishes the year on sheltered terraces and Victorian park fringes.
