Bee swarm in Gretna? Help is a minute away.

Gretna sits at the border of Scotland and England on the Solway Firth — famous for its runaway marriage tradition since the Marriage Act of 1753, and now a busy service town on the A74(M) corridor. The Sark Water and the Kirtle Water, twin border rivers, carry willows and alder into the Solway; the fertile Solway plain farmland east of Gretna produces oilseed rape from late April, giving a strong early flow on both sides of the border. Hawthorn hedgerows are thick on the old Cumbrian–Dumfriesshire field systems; sycamore and lime line the village streets; and sea-lavender covers the saltmarsh of the Solway Firth shore to the south, an unusual coastal forage for any bee colony in range.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors attend swarms in the Sark Water willows along the border, in the oilseed rape field-margin hedgerows on the Solway plain roads east toward Longtown, in the sea-lavender saltmarsh scrub south toward the Solway shore, and in the stone garden walls and eaves of the older Gretna Green and Springfield village properties.

Forage in Dumfries and Galloway

The mild Solway climate means spring starts earlier than most of Scotland. Blackthorn and hawthorn open the year; sycamore is important. Oilseed rape is moderate. Lime carries June in Dumfries and Stranraer. Galloway Forest contributes bilberry, rowan and late ling heather; coastal sea-campion on the Solway adds character. Himalayan balsam along the Nith gives a long late flow, and ivy on whitewashed cottage walls closes the year.
