Annan is a market town on the Solway Firth, at the mouth of the River Annan where it widens into the tidal estuary on the northern shore of the Solway — a modest-sized town with a long history as a port and an agricultural market centre for the eastern Solway plain. The Annan's willows and alder run through the town; the Solway shore carries sea-lavender and sea-aster on the saltmarsh margins east toward Waterfoot. Oilseed rape is widely grown on the fertile Solway plain; hawthorn is thick in the field hedgerows; sycamore lines the older residential streets. Ivy on whitewashed stone cottage walls closes a long, mild season extended by the Solway's warmth.
Collectors attend swarms along the River Annan willows through the town, in the oilseed rape field-margin hedgerows on the Solway plain roads south toward Brydekirk and the Solway shore, in the sea-lavender saltmarsh scrub east of the town, and in the stone garden walls and eaves of the older properties near the town hall.
