Shildon holds a unique place in railway history as the western terminus of the Stockton and Darlington Railway — the world's first public steam railway — and Locomotion, the National Railway Museum's Shildon site, commemorates that legacy. The town sits in the middle-Durham plateau between Bishop Auckland and Darlington, surrounded by the permanent pasture and hedgerow farmland of the Wear lowlands. The Brusselton and Eldon Hill colliery restoration grasslands on the town's edge, now well-established wildflower meadows, are an excellent summer forage resource for local bees.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the mature garden trees and allotment hedgerows of the older terraced streets around Church Street and Dale Road, along the hawthorn and elder scrub of the old railway embankments and Brusselton colliery restoration sites, on the wildflower grassland margins towards Eldon and West Auckland, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older brick colliery-housing properties.

Spring is slow to start. Sycamore and hawthorn carry the early flow; oilseed rape is moderate on the lowland. Lime fills June in Durham, Bishop Auckland and Darlington. The defining late-summer flow is North Pennines heather — Teesdale, Weardale, Edmundbyers — still producing some of the finest ling honey in England. Rosebay willowherb is heavy on ex-colliery land; bilberry on upper moorland adds a supplement. Ivy on cottage walls in the dales closes the year.
