Seaham is a former colliery port on the Durham coast, its harbour built to ship coal from the inland pits and now better known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and the remarkable wildflower grasslands of the Durham coast path. The magnesian limestone coastal strip between Seaham and Easington supports some of the most flower-rich grassland in northern England — spring gentians, bloody cranesbill, rock rose and wild thyme — and these limestone meadows, combined with hawthorn and elder scrub along the cliff top and the gardens and allotments of the town, give Seaham bees a distinctive coastal forage season.
Collectors regularly attend swarms on the limestone grassland and hawthorn scrub of the Seaham and Blast Beach nature reserves, in the garden trees and allotment hedgerows of the older terraced streets around North Road and Church Street, along the cliff-top scrub margins towards Dawdon and Murton, and in the chimney stacks and roof voids of the older colliery-housing terraces.

Spring is slow to start. Sycamore and hawthorn carry the early flow; oilseed rape is moderate on the lowland. Lime fills June in Durham, Bishop Auckland and Darlington. The defining late-summer flow is North Pennines heather — Teesdale, Weardale, Edmundbyers — still producing some of the finest ling honey in England. Rosebay willowherb is heavy on ex-colliery land; bilberry on upper moorland adds a supplement. Ivy on cottage walls in the dales closes the year.
