Middleton-in-Teesdale is the capital of upper Teesdale, a small market town on the River Tees that sits below some of the most botanically rich upland hay meadows in England — the globe flowers, wood crane's-bill and mountain pansies of Teesdale are internationally recognised. The town itself is largely built in London Lead Company stone, and the surrounding dales carry hawthorn-lined hay meadow walls, riverside alder and willow scrub, and the North Pennines heather and bilberry moorland that begins in earnest a few miles upstream toward High Force and Cauldron Snout. Swarms are relatively uncommon this high in the dale but occur regularly in late May and June.
Collectors around Middleton attend swarms in the walled gardens and sycamores of the older stone cottages on Market Place and Bridge Street, along the Tees riverside hawthorn scrub below Mickleton, in hay meadow field-wall cavities on the Lunehead road, and occasionally in the outbuildings of the North Pennines sheep farms toward Holwick and Harwood.

Spring is slow to start. Sycamore and hawthorn carry the early flow; oilseed rape is moderate on the lowland. Lime fills June in Durham, Bishop Auckland and Darlington. The defining late-summer flow is North Pennines heather — Teesdale, Weardale, Edmundbyers — still producing some of the finest ling honey in England. Rosebay willowherb is heavy on ex-colliery land; bilberry on upper moorland adds a supplement. Ivy on cottage walls in the dales closes the year.
