County Down · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Downpatrick? Help is a minute away.

Downpatrick is the county town of Down, set in the drumlin lowlands where the Quoile River winds toward Strangford Lough. St Patrick's Cathedral crowns the hilltop above the town, and the ruins of Inch Abbey stand amid the river meadows to the north-west. The Quoile Countryside Area stretches along the riverbanks with extensive reedbeds, willow scrub, meadowsweet and purple loosestrife providing summer forage. Himalayan balsam lines the river corridors in July and August. Drumlin farmland on all sides carries deep whitethorn and blackthorn hedgerows, with hawthorn blossom heavy in May. Sycamore and lime grow on the older streets in the town centre.

Forage in County Down

Blackthorn on drumlin hedges opens the year; sycamore is the dominant May flow. Hawthorn is abundant. Lime in Newtownards, Bangor and Downpatrick gives a strong June crop. The Mourne Mountains carry ling and bell heather — a genuinely distinctive Mournes heather honey. Bramble is dense; coastal sea-aster on Strangford Lough adds character; himalayan balsam on the Lagan gives a long late flow. Ivy on whitewashed cottage walls closes a long, mild year.
