County Armagh · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Portadown? Help is a minute away.

Portadown is the largest market town in north Armagh, straddling the River Bann where it widens toward the Upper Bann navigation. The town is known as the rose capital of Ireland — the rose trial gardens at Tannaghmore and the nursery grounds along the Mahon Road hold a remarkable diversity of flowering stock from June through autumn. The Craigavon Lakes and parkland lie a short distance north and provide open water, willow scrub and rough grassland. South of the town toward Loughgall and Richhill the ground rises into orchard country, and the April–May apple blossom is the dominant early-season flow. River Bann willows, bankside hawthorn and meadow margins add to a long forage season.

Forage in County Armagh

Apple blossom in the Loughgall, Portadown and Richhill orchards gives one of the most concentrated early pollination flows in the British Isles. Hawthorn and sycamore follow. Lime lines the Georgian streets of Armagh city. Bramble is dense on the small-field landscape; clover still matters on pasture. The Ring of Gullion and the Sperrins edge contribute bilberry and late ling heather. Ivy on whitewashed cottage walls closes a long, hedge-rich season.
