Charlemont is a small Plantation-era village on the south bank of the River Blackwater at the Armagh–Tyrone border, facing the estate town of Moy across the river in County Tyrone. The Blackwater here is broad and slow, fringed by willows and bankside meadow; the floodplain carries white clover and meadow flowers in the damp low-lying fields. The ruins of Charlemont Fort overlook the crossing — a Jacobean star fort that once guarded the strategic Blackwater gap. Apple orchards are found on the better-drained farmland east toward Armagh.
