Bee swarm in Boscombe? Help is a minute away.

Boscombe is a coastal suburb east of Bournemouth with a Victorian pier, the sheltered Boscombe Chine gardens running down to the shore, and long terraced streets of Victorian and Edwardian houses. The chine carries sycamore and pine above a sheltered garden corridor; cliff-top gardens produce an early flush of coastal wallflower and valerian in spring. The promenade esplanade gardens facing Boscombe Bay are well-sheltered and productive across early summer.

Typical swarm locations

Boscombe Chine sycamore and elder canopy in the descent to the shore is a regular swarm site. Cliff-top garden walls and esplanade lime planting on the Undercliff Drive approach are often reported. Victorian and Edwardian terrace rooftops and chimney pots on Christchurch Road and Boscombe Spa Road produce cavity swarms regularly. The Fisherman's Walk cliff-path gorse and hawthorn scrub is also a known gathering spot.

Forage in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

The season opens on gorse at Turbary Common and Canford Heath from February; blackthorn in the chine hedgerows follows. Lime in Bournemouth's public gardens — the Central, Upper and Lower Gardens along the Bourne chine — delivers a fine late-June flow. The Hengistbury Head headland and Stanpit Marsh carry sea-lavender, sea-aster and coastal scrub into August. Bramble is dense in the chines and on the heath edges. Bell heather and ling on Canford Heath and Turbary Common give a late-July to September supplement that few coastal UA areas in southern England can match. Coastal ivy on cliff-face gardens and older bungalow walls closes the year.
