Bee swarm in Gresford? Help is a minute away.

Gresford is a large village in north-east Wrexham county borough, set in rolling pastoral farmland south of the River Alyn and known for the medieval All Saints' Church — whose bells are counted among the Seven Wonders of Wales — and for the Gresford Colliery disaster of 1934 that transformed the community. The village sits between the arable and improved-pasture vale of the Alyn to the north and the heavier clay farmland running towards Rossett and the English border. Hawthorn is dense in the ancient hedgerows of the surrounding fields; white clover dominates the permanent grassland between Gresford and Marchwiel, and the ornamental trees of Gresford Miners' Memorial garden and the church grounds provide additional spring forage. The South Clwyd BKA covers this village and surrounding parish.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors attend swarms in the churchyard yews and ornamental trees of All Saints' churchyard, in the established gardens and orchard remnants of the older village properties along Church Street and High Street, along the River Alyn bankside willows and alder below the village, and in the mature hedgerow trees of the surrounding farmland field margins.

Forage in Wrexham

Hawthorn and blackthorn are dense in the ancient hedge lines of the vale of Llangollen and the Dee valley. Sycamore fills every valley slope and sheltered lane, giving a reliable early-May flow. Oilseed rape is grown on the flatter arable land east of Wrexham toward the English border and the Maelor plain. Lime trees line the older streets of Wrexham city centre and the grounds of Erddig Hall (National Trust). Bramble is prolific on the Esclusham Mountain and on the Ruabon Moor edge. Heather and bilberry contribute from Ruabon Mountain and the Cyrn-y-Brain ridge above the city. White clover on the permanent pasture of the lower Ceiriog valley is still a useful flow in a good year.
