Castleford is a former mining and glass-working town on the confluence of the Aire and Calder rivers in the West Yorkshire coalfield, now undergoing substantial riverside regeneration along the Calder and Hebble Navigation. The river corridors here — willows, alders, and flag iris along the Aire, bramble and rosebay willowherb on the post-colliery reclamation grasslands, white clover across the regenerated meadow parks — give local honey bees a richer and longer season than the town's post-industrial character might suggest. Castleford is sometimes called the 'City of Calder' by locals proud of its river heritage.
Castleford collectors attend swarms in the riverside willow and alder carr of the Aire-Calder confluence at Redhill and Bulholme Lock, in the bramble and rosebay willowherb of the reclaimed colliery land east of the town, in the lime-lined streets and garden boundaries of the older residential areas around Carlton Street and Smawthorne Lane, and in the chimney pots and Victorian terrace roof voids of the older streets near the town centre.

The lower valleys of the Aire, Calder and Wharfe open with sycamore and wild cherry in April, before the hawthorn and hill meadows of the Pennine fringe come in. Bramble carries the middle of the season, supported by rosebay willowherb on the post-industrial brownfield — a strong northern flow. The signature crop is heather: bell from late July and ling through August on Ilkley Moor, Baildon, Ovenden, Rishworth and Denholme commons, giving the thick, ambercast heather honey that remains a point of local pride.
